When Will Wells and Hugo Schumacher came together in 1922, they had no idea that they were on the ground level of what would become one of Wisconsin’s most dependable printing companies. Over 90 years later, Wells Print and Digital Services continues to serve its customers with quality products by implementing the latest available technology.
In the humble beginnings, Wells Print and Digital Services, then called Quality Printers, had an equipment list that included a single hand-fed Craftsman press. After Hugo left, the newly incorporated Wells Printing Company moved to a larger facility on West Main St. and purchased a new Linotype typesetter as well as Madison’s first Heidelberg press. As Wells continued to grow, Rufus, Will’s son, started to learn the business under the tutelage of his father. He learned the machines, he learned customers. Simply put, Rufus learned the printing business. When Will retired in 1942, he turned the business over to Rufus, who then proceeded to build Wells Printing into one of southern Wisconsin’s leading printing companies.
In 1966, Rufus retired and sold the business to long-time employee Carl Schorr and his business partner Dick Massey. Carl had been working at Wells Printing for over 20 years and, much like Rufus, he learned the printing business from the ground up. More importantly, Carl was eager to prove himself as a business owner and a leader. With new ownership and new management Wells entered the new age of printing.
Because he had personally worked in every aspect of the company, Carl knew that Wells always maintained an advantage by staying on the cutting edge of technology. In 1969, the
purchases of a new offset presses, a brand new darkroom department as well as some of the latest bindery equipment helped Wells stayed ahead of the curve in the printing industry. Wells Printing returned to its roots as a family owned and operated business when Carl’s wife, Janet, and his son, Tom, bought out Dick Massey in 1979. A few years later Wells moved its operation from its home of 50 years on Main Street to a new facility at 3121 Watford Way. The move gave Wells a new, clean building with 3 times the floor space, loading docks, air conditioning, free parking and plenty of room to grow.
Under its slightly revamped leadership, Wells moved into the new era of printing by adding new digital imaging equipment. This equipment not only improved the quality of their products, but also the speed of their production. Since then, Wells Printing has changed their name to Wells Print & Digital Services to better describe what services they offer their customers. To this day, Wells continues to stay on the forefront of technology, helping them hold their place as one of southern Wisconsin’s leading printing companies.
